Lymph Drainage Massage

What is the lymphatic system?

The lymphatic system is an important part of your immune system. The lymphatic system assists the body by removing and destroying waste, debris, pathogens, and toxins. It is also responsible for removing excess fluid from the body. Fats and fat soluble vitamins are transported by the lymphatic system. Within the lymph nodes, the immune system analyzes foreign bacteria and viruses and produces the antibodies to them.

Lymph nodes can become blocked and the lymphatic circulation inhibited by a number of factors. Environmental toxic burden or post-surgical loss of lymph nodes are two very common factors. Since lymphatic circulation is dependent on muscle contraction, a sedentary lifestyle can also contribute to swelling or edema.

What does a lymphatic drainage massage look like?

Lymphatic drainage massage is a very gentle rhythmic massage stimulate the movement of superficial lymphatic drainage throughout the body including the concentration of lymphs nodes found near joints. A light wave motion assists the body in moving congested lymph. The massage starts at the terminal ducts just above the clavicles near the center of the body. The lymphatic system in the abdomen is addressed followed by the arms and legs.

Lymphatic drainage massage is especially good to relieve symptoms of edema; whether that is from a detox situation or post surgery. Lymphatic drainage massage is particularly helpful when recovering from an acute or chronic illness.
